What is your Unique Selling Point? (Why would someone use your business over another?)
Having lived in the same area my whole life, I know the local beach breaks very well and my experience as a professional athlete allows me to easily assess my student's strengths and deficits to enhance their learning.
How have you funded it so far?
What were you doing before you set up your business?
Surfing on the professional circuit for 14 years.
Where did the idea come from?
My love of the ocean and giving back to the sport that I love so much.
What's the smartest thing you've done so far?
On the South Coast, word of mouth goes a long way. Besides that, I use to do a lot of advertising in local pamphlets and visitor booklets. Since then I have also had my car branded which seems to get attention.
What's the one thing you would do differently?
When I started out, I had no idea how important advertising would be. If I had marketed my business correctly from the word go, I would most likely not have needed to get another job. In the last 2 months I have set up a new website and fb page and I’m hoping with a lot of social feeds that I will get enough business to do what I love full time.
If your business was a flavor of ice-cream, what would it be?
Vanilla with an assortment of different toppings: While teaching the basic skills (vanilla) one has to adapt to one's students in order to facilitate learning. Adjusting the toppings (lessons) to suit each students learning ability.
What outside ideas have inspired you?
I love surfing and at the time it was all I had ever done or known. My dream is to motivate, inspire and teach others the sport that has brought me so much joy. Traveling the world and meeting the most amazing people, the possibilities are endless.
Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?
I hope to be doing my surf adventure camps/trips full time.
What’s the best financial advice that you have received, that you would like to pass onto our audience?
Pay yourself first, 10% of everything you earn. Invest that 10% in a place where it can grow.
What 3 attributes are most important to you if you were going to hire somebody?
- Passion for surfing, fun and easy going
- Must be able to interact with people of all ages
- They will either be qualified surf instructors or lifeguards ( Someone with a lot of experience and knowledge of the ocean )
- Reliable and trustworthy
